As people dedicated to researching, discerning and interpreting past  traces, how can we ensure that our own digital records and impressions  can be retrieved and deciphered many years from now? The intention of  our symposium is to reflect on this question, suggest possible  solutions and explore new directions. We shall consider the advantages  of and obstacles to archiving our fundamental data on media and in  formats founded on open standards. The open source community does much  to foster open standards and has gifted us with opportunities to  discard proprietary software. Our forum will discuss and illustrate
what open source software can do for our discipline. The fruit of our  gathering should be a a growing set of suggestions and recommendations  on safeguarding our digital information, keeping it open and  approaches to ensuring it can be shared and exchanged without obliging  receivers to use or procure proprietary applications or systems.
